What defines a great leader?

Everybody definition of a “great leader” contrasts in many ways. Some people may define a great leader as one who leads by example, or one who is considerate. What ever it is we think of a great leader is, there is one common characteristic carried by all so called “great leaders.” Emotional intelligence is the ability for an individual to absorb, manage, and act upon their environment; thus it is a characteristic that resonates in many great leaders.

The idea of emotional intelligence arises around several themes: social awareness, self awareness, self management. Some on that is socially aware is able to control their actions based upon their perception of others. For example if someone apart of their team recently suffered from the passing of a family member, it would be inconsiderate for you to joke about it. Although this example is over emphasized, it paints a picture of what it means to be self aware. Great leaders are also very aware about their own capabilities. Self awareness if the ability for someone to understand their limits and capabilities. Great leaders tend to know their place in the world, and it thus common for them to ask for help when they are unsure of something. Furthermore, great leaders also hone the ability of self management. This is a means of holding yourself accountable to deadlines, promises, values, etc.

Any leader who is able to develop their self awareness, social awareness, and self management is on the path to becoming someone great. Being able to listen, manage, and respond to yours and other responsibilities is what is needed become a successful leader in todays age.
